Great comments!!! BBTS is an institution and rightfully so! Glad to see it getting notoriety. Good, proper and sometimes bad (yet in a good way). Although once a weekend (and sometimes "weekday") regular, decades ago, I hit BBTS once or twice a year now. Les the manager, the bartenders and many regulars treat me like I never left. The real regulars have their photos on the wall -- somewhere... The intense regulars married girls they met at Blackies. I am both. Cheers pals. See you soon!

How they make a beer so freaking cold, I have no idea...gave me all kinds of brain freeze. Nothing like mid-day frozen beer drinking with your middle aged male family members followed by swerving your cruiser bikes through throngs of tourists on the outside boardwalk... Dude bros, enter at your own risk. This isn't a place for the faint at heart- gramps at the bar can kick your beer bonging ass in his sleep. So much testosterone, I almost felt inclined to itch my nonexistent parts. Almost.

fun little hole in the wall place! pool tables and pretty good Bloody Marys

Great memories at BBTS for decades...we've been gone since 2004 but still remember everyone like it was yesterday. One day, who did we see walking in Kihei? None other than Les himself! What the heck was he doing in our neck of the woods? Was great to see him and having an ice cold BBTS draft would have been even better. We miss our compadres and all the stories and laughter and pool and peanut shells. BBTS will forever be in our hearts and whenever we hear someone start singing "Happy Birthday", well...we just smile and start to laugh :-) Miss you guys!

Blackie's was one of my old haunts when I lived in Newport. It's a sports bar that serves food and sits right along the sidewalk along the North side of the pier. When in Newport I like to stop by and have a beer just for the memories. Parking is a problem during the summertime due to the beach crowd. It is a cool place to stop by if you are down near the pier. It is a Newport icon that is why I am so surprised it was not even in the system.

If you arent a regular or under the age of 65 then you probably are NOT welcome. I stopped in here with my brother (during our pub peddle) and we felt like we were intruding on someones personal super bowl party. They had a potluck set up on the pool table and didn't seem to want us to stay for longer than one beer. By the way... CASH ONLY

Hey, this bar has been around forever. It looks it and it is where I would go when I didn't feel classy enough to go to Beach Ball (next door). It has old surfers and bikers and trailer-livin folk who like it that way, thank you very much. Don't give any crap and they won't take it. That is the beauty of Blackie's. Ya gotta love it as it is. Like I intimated before...if you can't handle Blackie's, go next door to Beach Ball.

Great beer and vibe. The toilet is like something from a prison in Bangkok, not for the faint of heart.

    Still going strong.

This is the coldest beer I think I have ever had. I love this place, I like to go in the afternoon where I think the average in the place is Near Death, but they are all friendly locals, just there to have a great time and relax. I like going there with this great looking girl friend of mine and she brings life into some of those old codgers. Check it out Great Place!

Blackie's By The Sea is yet another dive option in the peninsula's drinking war zone. If you had enough drinks you would think that you actually walked right back into the neighboring Beach Ball. Same concept: a dirty dump with ice cold beer and low prices. Neon signs? Check. Pool tables, Check. Musty and stale scented air? Check. Disgusting bathrooms? Oh, you bet. The only real difference between Blackie's and any other dive is that there are a lot of license plates on the wall and the bar is cash only. So, if you like dive bars or are on a crawl in the area put Blackie's on the list. Why do bartenders at dives always seem so surly?

I have memories of this place that will be with me forever. Nothing romantic, just a fun night by the beach with group of great friends when we were young and carefree. Recently visited again and it was even better than what I had remembered. This place welcomes food from outside. I picked up some corn dogs and fries from Jane's corn dog and went in for cold draft beer. Staffs are all very cool, friendly, and easily approachable. How can you go wrong with beach and beer. =)

  • Michael L.

Dirty, dingy, dark, and dank. Peanut shells all over the floor. It gives character, and it's somewhat endearing... but I could see how it's a hazardous when you're completely intoxicated. But then again falling on the floor whilst under said state of mind is quite hilarious. Only a local could love this place. And they do because they wear Blackie's crewneck sweatshirts while drinking at the bar. Oh, and the locals start drinking strong shots early... like "it's 5pm somewhaarrrreee" kind of early. Yup. Cash only with ATM on site.

  • Sevrin N.

What I like about Blackies is first the excellent view at sunset! Of course the ice ice cold beer is always the best. Cool atmosphere. Pool tables too.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.......Blackie's! Nothing fully clothed is more fun than an afternoon in Newport that includes a bar hop. Start at Mutts for one or two cold ones, then trundle on down to Blackie's to top off the tank. (FYI - NBPD has a thing for drinking, wondering around in public intoxicated and being an asshole and DUI's....they don't care for any of them at all. Take the necessary measures to prevent an 'E' Ticket ride in a cop car, You have been warned.) Blackie's is quintinsential dive bar of Newport Beach, it's better when it is filled with all the regulars, usually off season which is the best time to go, but the tourist crowd can be interesting as well as are the 'Amature' or 'Baby Drinkers, (The ones that think all drinks need to taste like a tootsie roll or a sour apple...etc.), they'll come in a group of 2-4, poke their little heads around, see it's cash only, complain they only have 'Mom or Dad's' credit card and usually leave with a flip comment....perfectly fine with me, more beer over here please!

    (4)
  • Randy A.

The real deal....some of those guys are the same ones sitting on bar stools who were there 30 years ago, I'd guess. I LOVE this joint.

  • Angela Z.

Divey of dives in Newport Beach. the smell of the sea ,peanuts old beer and old guys who smell like stale beer. lol. they got PBR for 1.50 which is a fave of mine to drink at dive bars. this place is more fun later in the afternoon people start coming in after a day of sun and water and are ready wet their beaks. people are all nice regulars and tourist alike. The bartenders are friendly and tell good jokes. if you have a group of friends to go with i suggest this place to kick back at after a long day of fun in the sun.

    (3)
  • Dan W.

Great for bloody marys and breakfast right near the beach.

    (5)
  • Mike M.

Dive, dive, dive. This place is a locals watering hole and the definition of a dive bar. The decor seems like anything they had lying around in the 80's was drilled up on the wall and never touched (or cleaned). This place is very dirty, dust everywhere, sticky floors etc. They do have cheap beers, but it is a dirty dive.

  • Lili H.

If you have read my reviews you know I love dive bars and I LOVE the beach, well Blakie's By The Sea yelp.com/biz_photos/blac… has those 2 ingredients so it deserve 4 stars in my book. I always had beer over there, never tried their cocktails, but even though they don't have my usual craft beers I enjoyed my visits. This bar is quite fun, especially if you are into people watching (like me) and maybe some eavesdropping... I only have been during week days and the place is packed with Caucasian-Newport-old-timer-residents. (That's a special breed... similar to the Newport Nancies that Donald S. mentioned on his reviews) I'm pretty sure the crowd drastically change at night or during the weekends, but at daytime during the week you will find an older crowd that have interesting (and sometimes unintelligible) conversations. When I walked in for the first time I felt sooooo young (YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and the decoration intrigued me, it's kinda rundown kinda... look for yourself yelp.com/biz_photos/blac… Quite convenient! Recommended if you are "this-kind-of-thirsty" when at the beach.

Old pictures cluttering the wall, surfboards hanging from the ceiling, disarray behind the bar, out-dated booths and seating, sand on the floor, dark and dank... doesn't get much better than this for dive bars! I absolutely love it! Whether you are coming here for a brew, some pool or a helping of some bar food you are sure to leave fulfilled. There are maybe 8-10 beers on tap; seems to be the usual, nothing special, no craft no IPA.. just beer beer. Domestic and Import at about $3-4 a mug. Wine and spirits also flow freely. Pickled eggs, bags of chips, varieties of nuts, hot dogs... need a pack of gum? Go ahead they have that for sale too. Grab yourself a Blackie's tee, available for purchase, so you can wear it proudly. The walls are seriously cluttered and jammed to the max full of old, awesome surfer pix and memories. Fun to browse around; license plates, TVs, old shirts, blow up doll garnished with a red, lacy g-string around her neck, mounted fish, nautical junk... you know, old beachy crap. But that's what makes this bar fun and unique. I think Blackie's wears it's nostalgia proudly, the bar has been around since 1953 and it's right there basically on the sand near the Newport Pier, ocean view. The bar attracts all kinds; young, old, tourists and most definitely old time regular locals. Fun to listen to the banter between the locals and the bar keep. Stop in for a cold one or two, you won't be sorry. Bring your cash though, that's all they take!! CHEERS!!

  • Nikka B.

A great little dive bar on the beach. Cash only with well-priced drinks, plenty of sports on TV and a few pool tables. Came in on a Friday evening and found seats at the bar no problem. Limited selection, but good pours and nice enough bartenders. Laid-back feel where everyone seemed to know each other.

    (3)
  • Douglas M.

This is a good bar! Basic, fun, reasonably priced and right on the ocean! We played a few games of pool ($.50 a game) had some brews and watched some football. The place is teaming with locals and the people we were with new so many of them! I would go back for sure. No credit cards though, but who cares. They probably don't have a blender either.

    (4)
  • Gina C.

This place has been here when I was a little kid... Always have told myself that when I get older I'm gonna go there. And I have. Many many times over and it is STILL cool. The bar is simple. So r the bartenders. Cash only as I remember. They have T-shirts u can purchase alone with good bar food. 2 pool tables a digital jukebox. Old Pictures on the wall and off the wall decore. And lots of TV's. And an ATM. But!!!!!.... BY far my FAVORITE FAVORITE ... Are the bomb ass pickled eggs!!!! Yup I said it. If your curious. At least u can try the best ones out there. And if you love them. They r the best here!!!!! So hope u stop in a Blackies. Cause this is such a cool bar:) through some nuts on the ground and get past the cold beer slushy in the top of your frozen mug!!!!

  • J S.

Great local dive bar. Right on the ocean! Cash only, (ATM available) chill vibe.

  • Julian D.

I really enjoy this place. Great bartenders. Cool local feel. Although I do think that in this day and age it should be called African American's by the Sea.

  • Charles R.

Best old surfers bar in California. I've been drinking here since December 1968 when I was on an extended R&R from Vietnam

    (5)
  • Trent D.

A real dive bar by the beach. What more could you want? Not many tourists here with brisk service. Cash only. If I lived here, I'd be here as often as my liver could stand. Grab a stiff drink, listen to the ocean, fall in love.

  • Cindy G.

Me & my husband went Friday late afternoon. We are not locals but have been going here for a cold beer couple of times a year for over 35 years. Usually the bartenders are friendly, not this time though. The small framed dark haired bartender was rude. He made a remark about "not being a waitress" after my husband paid and ordered 2 beers. Well no one said he was a waitress! We know customers order from the bar & carry their own beers to their seat! We usually tip good. No tip for this guy! Use to love this place. Local or not seems this bartender can't handle rush hour. Sure not like it was years ago.

    (1)
  • Evelyn V.

One of my go-to bars in Orange County! Definitely a local spot... I mean, it's been around for ages!!! Super cold beer! Great bartenders--love them all!!! Ahh, yes... Do keep in mind this is a cash only bar!

    (5)
  • Marc B.

Great neighborhood local bar. Not touristy, clientele age is 40+ (weekday noon). Grab a cold beer watch the ball game and chat with the tender. Don't expect craft brew or to find your next date but you can get a good cold beer and hear latest community news. Not pretentious no worries about walking in alone for a spell out of the sun. Enjoy! Ps - bartender knows his Tour de France.

I have decided to just walk to the liquor store around the corner, in the same parking lot of Blackie's, to buy my alcohol now. They tax on it because of the area, but I rather know what I am getting and paying each time instead of getting ripped off here. I have been here a couple other times with friends and not had a great experience, but the bar is conveniently within walking distance of the beach and it was nice to just pop in here for a drink and back out to the beach. The problem is the place is usually packed and filthy. The bartenders charge whatever they feel. I paid $5.25 for my first "Buttery Nipple" drink and the next was $7.50 and the same thing happened with the friends hubby and I were with on this visit. The only place to order your drink is in between people already sitting at the bar. Also, they used to take credit/debit on my previous visits and now it is cash only. Seems like an easier way to get people drunk and take advantage of what they are charged. Very sloppy system here at Blackie's and I wont be back!

    (1)
  • Scotty W.

It was really a dive bar but was to much fun just sitting and talking to other people from all over. Patrick the bar tender was nice. Made the visit a good one. Thanks for the conversation! I will be back again.

  • David L.

Great Dive Bar! The service is great, and the location is too. Always have a good time at Blackies. Plus, I swear they have the coldest beer on tap!

    (5)
  • Tammy G.

Dirty, dusty, divey with really old guys who grew up here still lining the bar reliving their glory days. And thinking they have a shot with the young women who just see them as dads and grandpas. Coldest beer around, and one of my favorite spots. Eat a "special sandwhich" (It really is terrific) and enjoy the beer while hiding away from the tourists - or your own kids, out on the beach. Music is provided by a decent juke machine - you also have pool tables minimal food and iced cold beer. That's pretty much it. Bring cash, or use the ATM. Nothing fancy, nothing too clean. I have seen them bounce the drunken rebel rousers more than once - so behave.

    (4)
  • Bob S.

Great bartenders, laid back bar, cool patrons, made you feel like you were in the bar from Cheers!

    (5)
  • Katherine O.

My previous boss used to come here 40 years ago, and I'm pretty sure it hasn't changed at all. It is cash only, but there is a credit union ATM in front of the pier. It is a really diverse crowd at times, but a relaxed everyone gets along kind of crowd. I honestly don't remember their beer selection or prices, but I'm always a fan of bars that serve peanuts.

    (4)
  • Bradley C.

The review that said it was dark, dank, and dirty was spot on. That is what gives Blackie's its charm. If it was bright, undank, and clean it sure in hell wouldn't be Blackies. Join the old guys and sit by the window and ogle the bikinis as they stroll back and forth on the sidewalk. Throw some more peanut shells on the floor, kick a pigeon back outside, and drink the coldest beer in town. Join in an old Newport Tradition!

  • Drew M.

Blackie's is the stuff legends are made of. Setting foot in here during daylight hours may lead you to a few conclusions: 1. You are significantly younger than every person inside. 2. You may wonder if these people have ever left those bar stools. 3. You feel like you do not belong. Chances are you, you do not belong in there. These guys lining the stools are legends- bodysurfing 30 foot wedge, old NB lifeguard studs, collegiate rowers and water polo players, ace fighter pilots, nobel laureates... well some of those might be the liquor talking. But the stories that exist within these walls should be sung by bards across the land. Stick around and you might even hear a few tales. Sure you can come here in the evening and pretend you are one of the in crowd, and you'll be served- but it's like visiting the hall of fame, you can walk around inside but that does not mean you've been inducted. Sit down, grab an ice cold beer (like seriously ice cold), and listen to a tale or two. Who knows, if you show up every day for the next 15 years too... you could someday be that legend. 3 Stars.

DARLA! Any place with my name hanging above the bar is my kind of place! Blackie's has been a regulars hang out for decades. Bring cash

    (5)
  • Bree B.

Saturday on a 3 day weekend we walked in at 7:00 got a booth and finally go some service... it felt like only one guy was working the bar and the booths... so empty beer sitting and in need of a consistent refill... the bartender when I could get his attention was very nice... no food but they are okay with you bringing in a pizza from next door

    (3)
  • Craig S.

Great bar right next to the beach there's some grumpy old shits there but there is at every bar. The staff is awesome.

    (5)
  • Annie P.

Loved this bar! We used to think Mutt Lynches was our stop off for a beer about it's way too young and obnoxious for our taste. So glad we found this little spot. It's a dive( good kinda dive), peanuts all over the floor and older crowd. Beer is super cold and great tunes on the jukebox. It felt like a lot of locals hang here.

    (4)
  • Caitlan S.

It was my friend's birthday and everyone there was so friendly and excited to celebrate with us! I will definitely be back

    (5)
  • Wes G.

The place smelled like vomit. I had to order bottled beer because I was afraid to catch E. coli. Come on, step it up a notch, you are by the beach. Never coming back there again.

    (1)
  • Thai-Johnathon V.

Blackie's is a place that you come to when you want to unwind. Bar stools are always taken by the loyal patrons, some of their names engraved on the seats for a permanent "seat check" but a booth is always open somewhere. If you're on an adventure of epic proportions and want to start it off right, then start at Blackie's. Buddies and I stopped here on our 2nd bar of the night, and got straight to business. After downing a car bomb each, we settled into a booth (had to scope one out for a while) and enjoyed the ambiance that bustled around us. A cold beer, I think it was an IPA (the particular drinks I had that night are fuzzy to remember) in our hands, we blended in with the grind at Blackie's. Cash only, and small tight aisles.

  • Jason M.

Cool little bar overlooking the Pacific in Newport Beach. I stopped in briefly during a recent visit to Southern California and got a nice icy mug of hefeweizen! Wish I had more time to chill out, great beach atmosphere!

    (5)
  • Jason B.

Very divy. I'm a fan of dive bars but this place didn't impress me much. It's filthy, the bartenders aren't very friendly and they close at 1am on Friday and Saturday nights. Ain't nobody got time for that.

    (2)
  • V Z.

Great bar. Drinks were seriously good. Beers on tap were diverse and quality suds. View is hard to beat for sure. TVs everywhere for sports viewing. If you too are searching for the neighborhood bar along the beach- look no further.

    (5)
  • Blake B.

My family has been going here since the first dory fishermen in Newport. Awesome bar! Hasn't changed much through the years. Can always run into one of the true locals here. Get some peanuts and a cold beer after a day on the water!

    (5)
  • Shelly B.

Great spot to watch the sunset Nothing changed in 30 years

    (5)
  • Giselle V.

Very comfortable atmosphere, but a bit too crowded. Seems like more of a hangout for the older locals than for my party of out-of-towners. Only stayed for one drink, but would go back if in the area.

    (4)
  • david W.

Home to the greatest jäger bomb. Fantastic prices. Only thing that sucks is this bar is cash only. Ps. Who eats pickled eggs?

    (5)
  • Patrick R.

This is my favorite bar in the world. Those that turn their nose up at it don't understand the allure of this "dive bar". They have awesome bar tenders, cold beer, many TVs and a great local crowd. I've been coming here for 20 years. Best bar in Newport, or anywhere for that matter.

    (5)
  • A+M M.

Classic bar right here. I'm not sure why, but it just screams old Orange County, dude--you know in a raspy voice with a beach bummy accent. Love hanging out with the regulars for Monday Night Football and sipping on ice cold pints of Sierra Nevada. Well, those were the old days. No more beer for me (I know, right?) so it would be nice if they stocked more variety in the liquor department. One advantage this place has over its next door neighbor is the availability of some good old fashioned comfort food like sandwiches, hot dogs and nuts. *snooty accent* The pairing really brings out the aromatics and complexity of the accompanying beverage. Regardless, you can find me here quite often sipping on Scotch and water and checking out whatever is on the tube. I typically switch it up between Beach Ball and this joint. Now that I live in Newport, I'm an Amurrican and being an Amurrican is all about the right to choose. Freedom, beer and Amurrrica! Heck yeah!

    (4)
  • j s.

This is your no frills bar. But it's just the joint you need to get away from all of the tourists and people from the IE who invade the beach because the sun is out. Luckily, they do not venture inside here. The beer is cold. It is much appreciated. They've got good pool tables, and their TV options are good. My wife and I enjoyed some beer while watching some TVG in there. This place may be full of lushes, but is that a bad thing? If you have time to kill, pop in for a beer here and at the Beach Ball next door.

    (4)
  • Jenn C.

This is kind of a standard dive. It is kind of dark, old, and a little dirty. There is random stuff on the walls. If I have to be honest, I have to say that it is nothing particularly special. However, I always have an amazing time here. I have never not had a good time here. Drinks are reasonable, but I think they only take cash. Once my friend ordered us some Tequila shots. The pours were unbelievably huge. I felt like I was practically drinking a glass of Tequila. They don't have a big selection of beer, but there are usually a couple of decent beers on tap. This place is right on the beach (obvious from the name) and it makes for a fun stop during a night of bar hopping along the beach. I have seen some sketchy people wander in, almost homeless looking, and some really old people. Still, I love it. It's a chill time. After Blackies, we usually go to the donut shop a few doors down and get ham and cheddar croissant sandwiches; it's a wonderful way to end the night (separate review to follow).

    (4)
  • Joseph W.

Beach front style bar, cash only. Simply enough.

    (3)
  • Kyle S.

The coldest beer in town and a good spot to shoot a couple games of pool.

    (5)
  • Erica R.

I'm definitely a fan of Blackie's now! They were great sports in hosting a bunch of drunken Santa's this Christmas. Also, helped a friend coordinate that a portion of booze proceeds be donated to charity. There were only 2 bartender's working, and it was probably the most people they've seen crammed in on a Saturday night, but they handled it like champs! Really, those two guys were ON IT! Although, all those $7 Stoli+Soda's hurt the pocket book (guess I should stop at 6..okay 9, next time) *Cash Only*

Went here recently for the first time with a friend while bar hopping around Newport Beach. The Good: - Beer is pretty dang cheap, especially for its location in posh Newport Beach. - The folks who work there are friendly and helpful. - A picturesque example of a beach dive bar. - Their jukebox machine had a surprisingly good selection of classic metal. The Bad: - Definitely not a place to go if you're looking for eye candy. - Pool tables could use a bit of a refurbishing. - I didn't think I needed to look in the bathroom to know how dirty it was based on the bar's sticky floors and smell. The Ugly: - While playing pool with my friend, an old caucasian man (possibly drunk) was watching us play. He shouted loudly and called me a ^#*&ing dumb-ass for racking the balls slightly off center. Serious Business. - I hate to play "that" card, but during the entire time I was there I got an uneasy feeling that some of its regulars don't take too kindly to "those types" like me and my friend being there. - by which i mean, young people.

Love Blackies! It's a family favorite and the beer is the coldest around!!

Everyone that works here is the best. One of my favorite spots in the OC. Thanks to Joe and the crew.

  • D J.

Blackies is known for having "The Coldest Beer in the World". I believe them! Blackies serves all of their beer about as cold as it can possibly get without turning into a beer slushie! They serve it in little glass mugs, and the price is defintely right. Blackies is a fun place to grab a beer, and it is never overly crowded. It is a little difficult to get a game of pool in, but other than that, you will have no issues getting good service. Everyone is really friendly, and there is a total 'Old Man Vibe" going on there. It's a casual place to grab a drink, but I don't usually stick around much more than a half an hour before going to my next destination.

Greatest cold beer in town..... Peanuts are great and the view is awsome! All Bartenders friendly .....always funs time dont forget to feed the meter

Stopped by here for a quick late afternoon drink after meeting some friends at Newport Beach. What I liked: -it's your typical dive -big beers -you can bring your own food in Why no fifth star: -it is your typical dive, which may turn ppl off. -really dark at times, and we came at 5pm -cash only bar Friendly staff though, bar-atmosphere would likely change in the evening.

O.M.G.. my second home. it would be my first if the managment would trust me overnight there. Best bar by FAR in Newport!!!! I will always love this place. Patrick is the best bartender in the world! xoxoxo Hell, I.ll be there tonight!

A perfect night!i get to see stars .Stop thinking that i am weird!! I am from LA.I assume flights to be stars.sigh But this location is perfect to get a few drinks. You get the drinks and once you step outside it's the beach wohoo!! But the place itself is a dive bar;small, shady, etc. But any place would feel good when you've got the best people around. It's a good spot to hang out at,because it's simple ,affordable and at the best location ever!! And they do have Tv's all around and if you take too much time in the restroom.Beware! somebody will knock the door and scream at you.All i could think was about the mean wolf in "Three little pigs" story .I am absolutely glad they didn't blow the room down :D -Smriti

Too many good nights here. No music unless someone pays for the jukebox (only reason it is not 5 stars), but other than that, it is always a solid time. Beer is freezing. Lots of locals, but everyone is nice.

There's a pool table and beers and guys who think they can dance. Good times are to be had here. Not very expensive for the area.

A real, and friendly, dive bar! Hooray! Decent beer selection (cash only though), and a good old-fashioned rundown bar. Thank heaven. On our visit, the staff were far friendlier than we've experienced at the Goat Hill, the Balboa Saloon, or Mutt Lynch's. A keeper. (NB: This was an off-season visit).

ii grew up on Newport beach and since i was a kid, this place has always been a sh@t hole. I enjoyed going here with my friends when i turned 21, for a moment or two, then we would go down to Mutlinches. Lately you have a midget bartender and a scanky bit@h the needs to go. I asled this scank bartender what the "special" was for Sunday, and she said a "mia Tia". After watching her pour some concoction "which was no were near a Mia Tia", this stupid bit@h said $10! I called bars from sunset beach to balboa and not one, top end bar, charged more then $8.50. And these are expensive places like Dukes, and Don the beach combers. Then i noticed that the bit@ch did it to other customers and chased them out. When i walked in, there was 5 people in the pace. By the time i finished my drink, it was empty. TO THE OWNER OF BLACKIES, GET RID OF THAT STUPID BIT@CH before you lose all your paying customers.

OlD SkOoL Oc bRo! A classic, a legend in Old Newport. Nothing better than that sun setting across the bar lined with the coldest of brews....! If you want a movie like setting and have any interest in ocean, beach or surf history this is your joint. The history and its patrons are thick with it!

Blackie's is tough, because it's a fun bar, but it would never be my first choice. First of all, the average age in there has to be north of 45, so if you're in your 20s and want some Newport Beach eye candy...go elsewhere! If you want to use your debit card to pay and start a tab...go elsewhere (cash only). Other than those two glaring weaknesses, Blackie's is an acceptable place to have a sunset beer and play a game of pool.

When I was a teenager hanging out at Newport Beach, this is where the dirty old men would be getting f'd up all throughout the day, leering and making comments to everything walking past. I never visited the place till much later in life, and the few times I went in there, the place always smelled like barf.

Huge fan now. When we could not get into Douche bar down the street we pulled up a spot at this great local "dive" bar that I would go to and hang out in any day. The people we met while downing a bunch of beers were down to earth, not pretentious and lots of fun. Had a bunch of Pistachios at the bar. We brought food in later in the night and hunkered down for some drunky fun. Thanks Blackies! you saved me from Douche bar.

I saw a guy at Home Depot in Vegas with a Blackie's t-shirt. We started to chat. His elegant wife came around the corner, gave me a scowl of disapproval, and said "Who's this honey?" "He was asking about my Blackie's shirt." She looked at her husband as if to say, I thought we agreed you weren't going to talk to lowlifes any more. Elegance can come at a steep price. "See ya," I said. If you're a Blackie's kind of guy you're probably never going to change. They steadfastly refuse to update and modernize. My last visit, I was a little disappointed that they had trashed the old TVs and put in nice new flat screens. Boo! Blackie's is all about stepping into a time warp back to 1963. I've been to establishments (Lucille's Barbeque for example) that have an overly calculated, formulated atmosphere comprised of stuff bought on eBay. The decor looks concocted by a focus group. Blackie's on the other hand is the real deal. It looks like a '50s frat house. They have ancient surfboards and other wacky artifacts hanging from the ceiling. The walls are cluttered with historic photos, taxidermed fish, and nautical memorabilia. There are snapshots of guys posing by huge fish they caught or guys standing by their 9-ft. surfboards. They have old beer signs. They have old patrons. Check out the floor! The linoleum has long since worn through. The concrete slab has paths worn in. It appears to have the original bar stools and booths. I suggest not bothering with the food. It's not even good for bar food. The grumpy barmen don't want to fix it for you anyway. They'd much prefer to watch a game or shoot the breeze with one of the regulars. They won't come to your booth and offer a refill, you have to go to the bar and beg. They'll get to you when they're damn good and ready. Normally I hate attitude from the staff but this is one of those places where they show affection by being surly. It's part of the "charm." You can get pickled eggs and other bar snacks. They have a decent selection of beers. I stay nautical with Anchor Steam. There's something about this place. I think about the legions of surfers, hipsters, hepcats, beach bums and gidgets that have traipsed through here over the decades. All of the epic benders that peaked here. It's a slice of boozing history. They must have a 99-year lease (with 1950s rent locked in). That has to explain why this place is still around. I love to have a beer here whenever I'm in the area. Tether your beach cruiser to a pole and come on in! Parking: None nearby. Best night: I never thought to come here at night. It could be a whole different scene (dive bar) at night, possibly explaining why one review mentioned assholes. It's the perfect daytime beach bar for taking in the sights on the boardwalk with the ocean sounds, smells and breezes that roll through the open door and windows.

The very definition of "dive bar" located on the beach in Newport. Close proximity to other bars/clubs makes this the spot to hit before you head to the after party. Huge & generous pours for a great price.

Lived here for 9 years and had avoided this place due to the rumors I'd heard. Sooooooooooooo, friends in town for the night, read Yelp reviews, we headed here. Good time, nice crowd, no stuck-up newport barbies or kens, pool table, smallllllllllllllllllllllll ladies room but doable! Cheap and COLD beer - nice people in the booth next to us....... and you can bring your own food in, pretty slick! We liked it and I'm just sorry I'd avoided it for so damn long, I was missing out! Blackies, I'll be back!!!!!
